I budgeted £5 per day in my food, excluding dining out. However, I'm now spending about £10 per day on food, including a mixture of raw food (including vegetable, beef, pasta, tomatoes, etc.), processed food (frozen pizza, chilled ready meals) and drinks (orange juice, etc).
I try to shop from the cheapest supermarket for the cheapest equivalent item if possible. For example, I'm buying mostly £0.5 / kg pasta (1 kg serves 5 - 6 meals for me), £0.425 / pc Asda romaine hearts for vegetable (1 pc each meal), £0.69 / L apple / orange juice, £4.52 / kg Lidl minced beef 10% fat (about 150 - 200 g each meal), £6.843 / kg Lidl diced beef (a 700 g package serves me about 4 meals). For ready meals, I initially shopped £1.79 per serving items, but now I'm shifting to £1.2 per serving from Asda, and I consume 2 servings per meal. And for frozen pizza, I bought medium 10" size pizzas (about ~390 g) for £0.85 each, and consume 2 per meal. On most days I have 3 meals per day, occasionally 2.
My food cost turns up to be about £10 per day. Is my estimation of £5 / day seriously wrong, assuming I always shop in the cheapest supermarket for supermarket-label goods?
P.S. I'm in the South West.
