@hebrewmyyah I thought that was the original logistical design of Walmart anyways? Open a Sams club in an area, that serves as a distribution hub and warehouse, but also a storefront. Then open walmarts nearby who get the majority of their goods from that Sam's club?

That way they didn't have to worry about paying for normal warehouse space, plus they held control of most of their logistical network. If so, wouldn't that make it redundant to convert it into a distribution center if it was already intended to be a distribution center?

Or am I missing something?
 
@danny86 Sams Club is like Costco. It has different products that Walmart.

Walmart is planning to use these for distribution centers like Amazon. Walmart is slowly gaining Online traction and now looking to compete with Amazon distribution. I'd say Walmart is a huge buy right now.
 
@hebrewmyyah walmart's an incredible buy right now. They're quickly gaining online traction with 50% and 60% gains in online sales. And considering that they're pulling in $500 billion in annual sales, with $15 billion in profit, have 5000 store fronts that can conquer last mile delivery, have Marc Lore at the helm of walmart.com, and currently only have a market cap of $300 billion, they are clearly undervalued.

Even with all the retail fear that plagued retail in 2017, walmart still managed to grow 40%. Now that the fear has subsided, it seems ridiculous that walmart doesn't have atleast a $400 billion valuation (especially when considering a company like amazon, which makes 1/3rd of the sales walmart makes, is inflated to a $625 billion valuation, which is nearly as much a microsoft).
 
@danny86 Sounds about right. Cost of keeping them open as stores was probably not worth it to them. Less worker costs (and other costs) at a warehouse, I suppose.
 
@ps37_4me My thinking is if they become pure distribution centers, they can fire the workers and fully roboticize most of their workforce for one large initial investment, but a good enough internal rate of return to make it worthwhile to have the lower longterm run rate.
 
@hebrewmyyah I believe only 10 are being converted.

Most of these are under performing stores.

The one closing in my area is in a part of down that has gone downhill in the past 10-15 years due to the big attractions in the area moving to a different part of the city.
