Hi,

Welcome to r/RentersInsurance. We're here to provide guides, answer questions and have (maybe) general discussions about renter's insurance (RI) .

Here's a quick and dirty starter's guide:

1) Do you need renter's insurance?

If you rent an apartment, house or some kind of dwelling, and you own more than $500 worth of stuff, the short answer is: Yes.

2) What's the coolest thing about renter's insurance? Probably that the things you insure don't even have to be in your apartment/domicile to be covered, in most cases. RI will normally cover items during a robbery or theft that occurs somewhere else. Pretty neat right?

3) What types of coverage are there?

There two types of coverage in general. Liability and Property. Liability would cover anything the policy holder may be liable during the course of some accident or similar claim made from another party against them.

Damages would cover items inside your home with an assessed value.

There is more nuance, and most policies will have a mix of both liability and property coverage.

More to come...
