Stimulus/Revival Package - Tranche 5 - May 17

@heliumskylark Overpopulation is not a core issue in India any longer.

Our TFR has dropped to 2.2 (very close to replacement rate of 2.1)

https://www.livemint.com/news/india...s-its-fertility-rate-falls-1563907229812.html

The problem is elsewhere:

Low quality of human capital - the skills are not enough for better quality jobs

High unemployment

Regional inequity in population - the population in the south is decreasing (TFR less than replacement) while in BIMARU states not decreasing fast enough. Fall in TFR is closely correlated to female literacy improvement.

We need to do more long term investment in education (especially female education) to solve this problem. Fascist impulses like one child policy are not the solution.

@derek1111 Even with a dropping TFR, we are still projected to hit 1.7bn by 2050. India is already struggling to provide a decent quality of life to the 1.3bn we have today - can we handle 1.7bn? The struggle for resources is going to be massive across all of South Asia and we should actively look to keep our numbers as low as possible.

@derek1111 As long as TFR is above 2, we still have enough reason to worry. We actually need TFR to drop below 2 and fast because there are already too many people and it will take ages to reduce this population burden as human life expectancy keeps increasing.
