@southernlady1967 Yep. I remember what an order of cheese sticks at red Robin used to look like in the 1990s and what they look like now lol.

You used to get six wide rectangles. Then five, then they cut the width in half.
 
@cdelapp208 They're actually filled with nitrogen to keep the chips fresh and crispy until they're exposed to oxygen when you open the bag and the nitrogen is in there at slightly higher than atmospheric pressure with extra space to help prevent the chips from getting crushed and broken in transit.
 
@raaven Big tobacco does this as well. If a cigarette could be filled with 2 grams of tobacco (I have no idea what it would weigh) then they'll develop a process where it can be filled with only 1.5g. That process is where the traces of ammonia stem from (think puffed wheat)
