Gold jewelry check

Not sure if this is the right place to ask this. Just curious. Probably a stupid question too.

Anyway, when u sell gold jewelry to retail gold shop in shopping malls or shoplots, how do they determine the jewelry is in fact real gold either 24karat (99.9%) gold or 22karat (91.6%) gold? Do they have some kind of machine to test or some droplet solution applied to jewelry to verify authenticity?

@kathleen726 theres some kind of testing machine, they point at the gold and it comes out with a reading

@kathleen726 Used to be old school acid test but even that test also can fake many years ago. Nowadays got machine can scan and determine.
