Alternatives to museli bars?

Looking for a more cost effective way for my partner to have a protein rich snack. Have considered making my own but I’m not sure it would necessarily save us money.

@corey7973 If your goal is protein let me suggest making little frittatas in a muffin tray? Egg and ham can be pretty cheap

@joshstick For a complete and very easy source of animal protein its very cheap. If you're not on that train then my other suggestion would be something chickpea based like a seasoned and roasted kind or possibly a chickpea and bean fritter if you're not afraid of the musical fruits

@ieltscertificates99 Yum, just hummus on toast sounds good. Delicious as it is, it does however get old fast.

@ricesn I like roasted chickpeas most. They're great with salads but also on their own. I usually season with salt and pepper and just whatever

@joshstick Goes up and down, sometimes you can get a dozen for $6. They did go fuckin bonkers for a wee bit though.

@joshstick Warehouse do a dozen barn-raised for $5. Usually some other options around too but depends where you're based.

@babychristian10 They’re not barn raised, they’re colony cages. “Bigger” than battery cages with more hens.

@dawi Ah, so they are, my bad. Colony cages meet the current welfare requirements. If you can afford to buy better then that's great.

@dawi I agreed that it's a rough life for a chicken, I also don't think there is a huge improvement in barn raised or most commercial free-range. 1 chicken per 750cm² for colony or 7-9 chickens per 1000cm² for barn and free range.

I also understand why people buy the food they can afford and know how to cook.

@babychristian10 That’s why you get SPCA approved eggs or eggs from someone where you can see how they keep their chickens.

@dawi The SPCA approved eggs are twice the price. They're also the same as the legal standard for free range.

@babychristian10 So? You don’t actually need eggs and they can be replaced with cheaper alternatives in most baking.
