Are we living above our means now that my spouse is staying home with the baby?

@aballa Then why not represent that as income in your Sankey?

Are we living above our means now that my spouse is staying home with the baby?

@aballa I am confused about the concept of a "guarenteed bonus". That seems oxymoronic. Assuming thats accurate though that plus the RSUs you mentioned neither of which are in your Sankey more than make up for your wifes salary.

    Invest vs pay down debt?

@marykate1019 You don't get the tax savings from your employer contribution, you are giving up a lot of tax savings only contributing 5% to your 401k. That is money not being saved for your retirement. As for not wanting to stretch yourself thing I understand that but you are the one that said...

    Invest vs pay down debt?

@marykate1019 If your goal is to retire then why are you only putting 5% into your 401k? I would be maxing that for the tax advantage and investing in broad index funds that cover domestic and international stock markets. Money beyond that I think paying down your higher interest student loan...

New to financial planning, I wasted 8 years of my 401K employment matching only 3%. Is it too late for me (30 F)?

@shanewp1988 Definately not to late. I f'd up worse than that. My employer didnt match so I stupidly didnt contribute. I didnt catch on until I was 36 and I didnt REALLY catch on until recently in my 40s. I bought a house at 35 and you already have one. Looking at the math I feel like Im still...

    6 month treasury bill - 4.48%

@basedluther Rates are always always annualized. 4.48% would be annual so it would be 2.24% after 6 months. There is basically no exception to this...if you see a rate, its annualized.

Do some people buy individual stocks plus their index funds?

@ramy6et I mean thats fine. Its also fine to buy a lotto ticket as long as you arent fooling yourself about what you are doing and planning your retirement around it. Investing can be a hobby as well as a critical part of retirement...just dont mix the two and you are fine. The risk is letting...

Do some people buy individual stocks plus their index funds?

@ramy6et I mean I dont think its a problem to buy individual stocks as long as you treat it like gambling and use money you arent relying on. If those stocks happen to do well or poorly assuming you treated that as a side thing for "fun" and not part of your retirement strategy I think its fine...

30-40k all in Disney stock what do I do?

@loreec If you have no income and you sell $40k of stock even if it was 100% gains you wouldnt owe any capital gains tax. So a year with no income is the year to do that.

New to financial planning, I wasted 8 years of my 401K employment matching only 3%. Is it too late for me (30 F)?

@shanewp1988 No better investment account than an HSA. Quadruple tax advantaged. Its FICA pretax...401k and IRA cant do that. Its fed/state pretax (401k/IRA can do that Its tax sheltered growth which all retirement accounts do Its tax free with qualified withdrawls like a Roth Most say its...

When people say ‘I’m saving X amount per month…’ what should this include?

@pleasegodprotectme "Savings" to me is any money you make that you do not spend. Doesnt matter where it goes. I admittedly take that to an extreme and would even consider home equity (the portion of a mortgage payment that applies to loan principle) to be savings but admit most people wouldnt...

What is the difference between APY and 7-day yield?

@ioannes The 7 day yield is what the interest rate was over the last 7 days and if that average rate held for the entire year then that is what you would be the APY. The APY is what you actually get in a year. So if the APY is 4% thats basically what the return is expected to be in a year...
