Saving for mortgage vs leaving Canada

@garry777 I'm kinda joking, but also kinda not. I'm referring to how 50% of housing in the area is owned by foreign speculative investors; very NFT like. If it doesn't crash, I'm probably out of luck. The line is going up so fast. I don't think I can afford a million. I wish I could turn back...

Saving for mortgage vs leaving Canada

@onevoiceunified I wish it were easier to get programming jobs in software companies in smaller cities. People say remote; a lot of the ones that are posted around are kinda low pay. I'm hoping a few years into working at a big software company would help build connections for remote jobs...

Saving for mortgage vs leaving Canada

@faith916 Maybe. I'd like to compare Canada to other countries and then decide what to do though.

Saving for mortgage vs leaving Canada

@inception Haha thanks! Sadly I'm only slightly kidding. The 60k usd is just the equity I can put towards housing, which would be built up over 4 years because of job. Might be able to save up to 20k per year from salary, depending on how much the cost of living goes up. I just don't want to...

Saving for mortgage vs leaving Canada

@torturedsoul Haha, fair. Where would you move to out of curiosity?

Saving for mortgage vs leaving Canada

@zonderzug That's the flowchart, eh? Well there's nothing tying me to Canada, except for bad memories of being homeless. I'm confident in my skills and my job history at global software companies might help. Sounds like a vote for leave, thanks!

Saving for mortgage vs leaving Canada

@justanoldfeller Yeah. A lot of people are saying 'don't even consider moving'. Since I'm mobile enough though, I'd thought I might as well ask about comparisons, educate myself, and see if there's anything worth being gained by leaving. Honestly moving to Europe, East Asia, South Africa, etc...

Saving for mortgage vs leaving Canada

@kimmac23 I wish! Need to go into the office a few times a week. Eventually if I can land a remote programming job (with good pay) I would definitely consider that as a good option!

Saving for mortgage vs leaving Canada

@ahappycamper Ah interesting, thank you for your insight. Helps clarify the US is one of the strongest choices. Europe is also an interesting choice. I guess it might be easier to get a TN if I ask my job for a relocation in the US - that being said, I don't see any reason why not to apply to...

Saving for mortgage vs leaving Canada

@michael17771 Thanks for the input, it's helpful to hear the prospective. Yeah, kinda a bummer eh?

Saving for mortgage vs leaving Canada

@bbcemt That's true. A lot of software jobs want hybrid, but maybe when it comes time to leave, I hunt for remote jobs as hard as possible and move somewhere rural

Saving for mortgage vs leaving Canada

@grams Yeah it seems more and more that way. I'm on the fence, but the mathematics just doesn't seem to work out here at all. According to other comments on this thread, the math doesn't work out anywhere, I'm just screwed. But I'm willing to keep looking until I find a path forward. Out of...

Saving for mortgage vs leaving Canada

@miku Noted! Yeah, the US might be better for software engineers. I might be leaning that direction now

Saving for mortgage vs leaving Canada

@jordan221 Noted! That looks like an interesting idea. Guess I'd need to rent for a year, but maybe it would be cheaper than the rent here a bit.

Saving for mortgage vs leaving Canada

@resjudicata Yeah. Honestly sounds at minimum marginally better then trying to rough it out here

Saving for mortgage vs leaving Canada

@klogan That's the thing. I'm not in the oil industry. I'm in software development. High paying remote jobs are hard to find - maybe a few more years in the industry + some time to throw darts at the dart board until I can land one would help. Save a remote job though, I feel like I'm more or...

Saving for mortgage vs leaving Canada

@onevoiceunified I've seen a lot of news talking about Canada's housing bubble. I'm looking at prices in Edmonton and Calgary as someone else has suggested in the comments. The prices seem about on par with southern Ontario though. My question is how bad is the bubble in other places in Canada...

Saving for mortgage vs leaving Canada

@belovedmiyo I know what your saying. I don't want to make a blind choice - I want to make an objective and calculated choice. Yes it's easy to say 'here is shit, let's so some here else'. Instead I want to say 'this is my situation in Canada. This is what my situation could be in '. I'm not...

Saving for mortgage vs leaving Canada

@belovedmiyo Ah really? That's kinda a shame. Maybe I play like a gambler and choose the best EV? I'd perfer to chose the most optimistic path What about places like Germany, France, Japan, Korea, Czechia, Norway, etc?
