Considering an E.V.-someone talk some sense into me!

@togeah I heard the batteries only last about 30,000 kms. You have any issues?

TIL - If your tax rate at contribution and withdrawal is the same, your take home from pretax RRSP contribution is the same as TFSA at withdrawal

@melsha RRSP contributions also increase your CCB if you have kids. I also suspect it is likely for high earners (or most people) to structure their RRSP withdrawals so that they are in a lower tax bracket than when they contributed.

PSA regarding the Wealthsimple 0.5% transfer promotion

@allart It would be nice, but you are using a "discount brokerage" and getting what you pay for. What you propose would add a lot of complexity, and if it is happening too much you can bet new legislation will come in the future to prohibit it. You can hire a full service wealth manager and...

PSA regarding the Wealthsimple 0.5% transfer promotion

@jimbone Based on the terms and conditions in the offer, you wouldn't even have to ask. It should happen by default, unless you also have a cash account.

“How a B.C. woman got stuck with a $4,000 bill after renting a pickup truck”

@chromosome16 That is fair, but then how do you know that the 'additional insurance' that the rental company offers doesn't have similar disclaimers and ways to weasel out?

PSA regarding the Wealthsimple 0.5% transfer promotion

@trungnghia93 It's accurate. It's not a deposit. Not so fun fact - if you only transfer over an RRSP and don't have a cash account, the promo money goes into your RRSP which means it will be taxed upon withdrawal. Best to be avoided.

Using algebra to decide between TFSAs vs. RRSPs for retirement planning

@joerob40 Often, but not always. Low income families can get quite a boost to their Canada Child benefit by contributing to RRSP.

“How a B.C. woman got stuck with a $4,000 bill after renting a pickup truck”

@chromosome16 Yes that is the sales pitch, but this is /r/personalfinancecanada, we are the center for reading fine print and saving every dollar possible. Many of us select credit cards specifically because of the rental car insurance perk, and are deliberate in using said card when renting a...

    Dividends Are Irrelevant (Sort Of...)

@boanerges1989 They might be irrelevant "for all intents and purposes" but they are not irrelevant. If a company never pays a single dividend between its creation and it's eventual dissolusion, then that company's shares should presumably worth zero today.

    US full-time contractor v.s CAD Full-time Employee

@nilz Go with Option 2. As an employee, your employer pays holiday pay, vacation pay, CPP and EI contributions (employer portions), Workers Comp, and you accumulate RRSP room, and you are protected by the Employment Standards Act of your province. They might have a health plan or benefits plan...

Canadian Couch Potato Method With Manulife

@nearu Your plan is perfect, you have done your homework. Figure out what % you want in the bond fund and then split the 3 equity indexes 3 ways equally so that the whole thing adds up to 100%. Once every year or two, transfer the entire thing out to your self directed RRSP. I personally like...

    Drowning in information

@hecallsmehisown Justwealth is a robo-advisor that specializes in RESPs and has "target date" RESPs at a low cost. If you transfer your RESPs to them, they can put the RESPs into funds that automatically become less risky as you approach the date you need the money. These you can really "set...

    Drowning in information

@hecallsmehisown So if you are happy with that for your RESPs, and if you are at Step 5 of the money steps, then you would probably want to get TD to open a TFSA each for you and your spouse, and invest roughly the same way. For the TFSA vs. RRSP question, I suggest TFSA simply for the fact...
