    Question over retirement

@lovedaisies Wait, so that seems pretty bad to me actually. So you can never actually get all your money out then?

    Question over retirement

@lovedaisies Per year, I assume? So you can empty your whole retirement in 5 years and 9 months, if you want. Probably what most people do is withdraw just a little more than they think they'll need each year, and the just reinvest what they don't need into another annuity.

Buying a car... that will hold value

@leo_meshay I bought a 2007 Polo in 2012 for R105k. I think it's now worth probably around R60k? So I think it has worked out very well for me. Doesn't make sense to buy a new car if you have to pay half a million for it. You'd be postponing retirement by a lot.

    Self employed bond frustrations

@brandon9 You should get a bond originator. But it does sound like you might be trying to get a bond that's too risky for the banks. One year of income probably isn't seen as stable. My bond is about a 6th of my pre-tax salary. And I also struggled to get a loan with a 10% deposit. Only...

The enduring myth of the collapsing rand

@deus_ex_machina Which is a very important difference Of course, it will be compounding regardless of how slow or fast the change is. Only way to have it not compound is to have no change, which is impossible.

Should I buy a car or apartment?

@32983 You really should not be buying a R400k car on a R65k salary. I earn double that and wouldn't spend more than R250k on a car.

The enduring myth of the collapsing rand

@deus_ex_machina There is a big difference between hyperinflation and a slowly depreciating currency. All currencies depreciate slowly. The USD just depreciates slower than all the others.

The enduring myth of the collapsing rand

@todosan Yes, but salaries also tend to rise with inflation, which is higher in South Africa than USA.

    EasyEquities fees shot up?

@noeljack This makes me hesitant to invest with them. Like how much of my money will they need?

Should I buy a car or apartment?

@32983 You just need to calculate the real cost of the car, and compare it with other things you can get for the same price. If you just put R400k in a savings account, that's R3700 per month that you'll get in interest. And your R400k won't be depreciating. You can use it any time you need...

    Prepaid electricity

@cyberrocky I buy through Standard Bank. I haven't noticed a convenience fee.l How much is it at Nedbank?

    Prepaid electricity

@harmonmarie The main thing you want to do is to make sure you stay in the lowest bracket. For me that means buying more than I need in the summer when I use less electricity. So that I have extra units in the winter without having to go into a higher bracket. Also, if you buy extra each month...
