Getting gifted a decent amount of money, can I afford a house?

@james3248 Thank you! This is why I posted on Reddit though, I love critical feedback and a little devil advocate because it shows so many different perspectives. Ultimately, non of these people know us personally, have had any conversation with us, or can full understand where we are at. But...

Getting gifted a decent amount of money, can I afford a house?

@james3248 Higher earning potential for sure! She’s really getting her masters to take her Covid year and play the sport she loves. She wants to coach after she is done, where a lot of schools do want a masters for. The pay is awful though, this is actually why I decided not to go into coaching...

Getting gifted a decent amount of money, can I afford a house?

@joannemaree She has a visa cause of school and gets another year on top of that (paper work should be finished next month). Not sure how long our green card will take though once we go to the court house. We won’t be DIYing the papers, a friend of mines father owns his own immigration law firm...

Getting gifted a decent amount of money, can I afford a house?

@tanga Thanks for the feedback! A lot of my friends around my age, younger, making less or the same as me pulled trigger and they seem a lot more happier. They just stopped going out as much and started having people over instead (which is awesome). I do think the monthly payment will be fine...

Getting gifted a decent amount of money, can I afford a house?

@cherylkiwi Like the comment, short and simple (unlike me) Any reason to put in both of our names? Since her family is putting down a pretty much the whole down payment I actually don’t mind the idea of it being “her home”. If we end up splitting year in the future I’d simple just need to find a...

Getting gifted a decent amount of money, can I afford a house?

@lidzia You and me both! My dad was never around and my mom mad 12k a year until she passed away while I was in school. Very fortunate to have met these people! They arnt even wealthy, (while I guess now they are) housing prices just went so high and they bought a remote home in the middle of no...

Getting gifted a decent amount of money, can I afford a house?

@tparkinson012 Really appreciate the comment! Yes it seems like a lot of people are saying a lot of the same things about the cost of owning a home not being all about the monthly payment for it! Def something we are considering, I think the only way we will buy a home is if she ends up getting...

Getting gifted a decent amount of money, can I afford a house?

@tparkinson012 Though I agree and appreciate the feedback I’d disagree on the small down payment. Most people in my area use half or less then half of what we have the opportunity to do. A friend I know used 11k as a down payment for a brand new build! The rest i will take the feedback into...

Getting gifted a decent amount of money, can I afford a house?

@cheyennebrown 20k was a lot for little ole me 🥹(kidding kinda). Based off her responds from her job applications more than likely Forest City Iowa, Detroit Michigan, and Jacksonville Illinois are the markets we would look at. All have median homes prices of under 200,000k

@cheyennebrown Even though you didn’t read the whole post this is very helpful feedback! 13k is my 401k though so couldn’t even touch that, I do have 20k in saving though. Wonder what feedback you have on townhouses and paying an HOA?

Getting gifted a decent amount of money, can I afford a house?

@burningbush84 Ideally mortgage payments no more than 1700. This way we still would have a good amount of cashflow! For the locations we have been looking though in good neighborhoods (meaning low crime) and houses we actually like the look and the inside we have found payments as low as 990...

Getting gifted a decent amount of money, can I afford a house?

@blastcat This might just be the most helpful response of them all! Thank you!! We are currently having conversation every night before bed planning, and started really doing research. This is really good stuff to consider and will help me like the right decision from a financial stand point and...

Getting gifted a decent amount of money, can I afford a house?

@blastcat We are moving slow, we are not in a rush to buy a home. This is just part of my research! We are just starting to have conversations since her parents told us about the money. I just want to know if our financial situation is more so ideal. Put it like this, if we were a married couple...

Getting gifted a decent amount of money, can I afford a house?

@allmyhope They say both of us, but of course it is my girlfriends (they’d give it to her even if I wasn’t around). We also plan to have a marriage license before we close! Since she is foreign, we’ve been together for 5 years and been living together for 3! House will probably just be in her...

@immd Thanks! That def something to consider and add to the excel sheet, are townhomes different by chance? Since the HOA? Or do they end up being more expensive.
