Extra retirement contributions or stay liquid?

@cristal11 Yep, my only debt is the student loans. Combined, my marginal federal and state income tax rate is 27.75%. So, I that 30% rule would say ROTH for me. Where’s that come from? Thanks for sharing!

Extra retirement contributions or stay liquid?

@dee12 Game plan then: Pay off the 4.8% chunk of loans, leave the other half at 3.1% on regular payments, and then shovel as much as possible into my Roth 401(k)

Extra retirement contributions or stay liquid?

@inquirer2016 Rent, transportation, groceries, utilities, phone, and my gym are $2-$2.5k per month. Bumping up to $15k to be safe probably wouldn't hurt, but between living cheap and ~$1500/mo of unemployment insurance if I got laid off I feel comfortable at $12k

Extra retirement contributions or stay liquid?

@humbledbydeath Neat tool. An extra half mil? So that's why they call them the golden years... Going to get that money to work. Thanks!

Extra retirement contributions or stay liquid?

@krispablos About 1/2 of the loans are at 3.1%. I'll probably pay off the higher ones after all the advice here, then focus on my 401(k)

Extra retirement contributions or stay liquid?

@tara5509 It seems like that's the consensus. Two years of higher 401(k) payments and the tax deductions save me enough to cover the student loans. Although I'll have to pay taxes later and with all this time to compound... maybe forking over the cash for the student loans and contributing to a...

Extra retirement contributions or stay liquid?

@tara5509 Shoot, should’ve included that I have $12k in an emergency fund. Killing the student loans instinctively sounds good. Thanks! But then what?

Extra retirement contributions or stay liquid?

I (23M) am on track to save ~$15,500/yr above and beyond what's required to max out my 4% 401(k) match, Roth IRA, and Health Savings Account (HSA) - budget pic below. I'm not sure what to do with the money. I could: Dump it into my 401(k) - regular or Roth - to get ahead on retirement savings...
