@carrico OK, that makes sense as it's still a disposal. Yeah, I guess my spouse could give me their profitable shares to sell and I could offset their gains against my losses for tax purposes and gift them money, and they could use it to repurchase my shares and transfer them to me after 30 days.

I believe there's no limit on gifting money or assets to one's spouse. If I had an asset that had depreciated since I bought it and my spouse had an asset that had appreciated, could I gift them my asset so they could sell them both and offset the CG loss against the gain, and then they gift...

@apples1500 I could have sworn my Dad told me they had lime render fitted fairly recently. Now he says they just had some "plasticky" stuff added on top of the existing render (probably concrete, 'cos it has been there since they bought the house in 1982) about 18 months ago.

@apples1500 I'll check to see if they've got any records. They've got some issues with damp, so it may need to be removed and redone in places but there's some other things we need to try first.

@apples1500 How can you tell if your lime render is insulated or not? My parents had it done sometime in the last decade but they probably didn't know they could get insulated lime render then.
