    @shawnab That's the big difference between the HSA and the now defunct FSA. The FSA had to be spent in the year you saved it.

    Are there any rules of thumb for how much to spend on a vehicle purchase?

    @jose7rivera This is the rule I try to live by. I pay cash for cars. Current budget $500/mo. $90 - Ins $150 - Gas (this is really going up lately) $50 - regular maintenance like oil changes $210 - Invested for the next car. I used to be able to put 250 away but gas is creeping up.
