Few questions about MF investment from the beginner

@anilp You can start investing in Direct funds, and redeem your regular plan units after the 3-year lock-in period gets over. Just make sure not to invest through Scripbox or through any other Regular plans any further. When purchasing units, make sure name of the fund has the word "Direct" in it.

Few questions about MF investment from the beginner

@resjudicata Yes. But dividend plan of an MF is a separate fund on paper, so it'd effectively be a switch. Here's what you do: Stop any active SIP in dividend plan, if any Don't invest (purchase) any further units in dividend plan of the plan Start new SIP (if you want to) or place new...

Few questions about MF investment from the beginner

@weiguang MF house as well as your transaction platform - would provide Capital Gain statement for all redemptions. An STP is a series of redemptions (with series of purchases); hence, you would get capital gain statement that would show all taxable gains from STP.

Few questions about MF investment from the beginner

@weiguang Yeah, ideally, if you're doing an STP - it's expected you know what exactly you'd do with respect to capital gain. It'd be levied on sum of gains realised by each STP-installment, at slab rate. Since the duration is small, gains would be negligible, and so would your taxes.

Few questions about MF investment from the beginner

@narrowgateevangelist At present, doubt Kuvera makes much. They have some value added service with third-part partnerships (term insurance with HDFC, ITR filing with H&R block etc.). Eventually they would get around to building a paid tier, I assume. But your investment isn't dependent on...

Few questions about MF investment from the beginner

@narrowgateevangelist Good of you to list down queries like this. Q1 Typically equity funds are high-risk, and debt-funds are of lower risk. But, mathematically, risk is standard deviation in returns. If expected return from asset A1 is U1, and risk is D1; then idea is that you can expect...

Kuvera has turned into a shitshow

@karenhampton Actually, this particular timeline for Liquid fund / Overnight fund to Equity fund switch transaction, has been around since before. What used to happen, and doesn't happen anymore; is if you switch from one equity fund to another, within same AMC; it used be same-day switch. Now...

Kuvera has turned into a shitshow

@scarlette This won't work. Liquid fund redemption won't happen same day, it'd take 1 working day for money to be available, so that it can be invested in the equity fund. Refer to this doc, says the same thing about timeline.

A brief timeline of Yes Bank's saga

@cowabunga Ideally, when a bank fails, RBI is supposed to merge it with an existing bank, and protect deposits / savings account balance of the depositors. Or, they can declare the bank has failed, invoke DGCIC insurance and pay every depositor 1L or their amount kept with the bank, whichever...

GME, WSB, and Fear of Missing Out (FOMO)

Unless you've been living under a rock, you're probably aware of GME and how Melvin Capital got short-squeezed out of their positions. Some might or might not agree that it involved deep pockets, and the retailers were only the catalyst. But fact remains, this is unprecedented. To understand...

LARGE CAP FUNDS VS NIFTY 50 FUNDS , A PERFORMANCE COMPARISONS SO FAR (DIRECT PLANS)

@imageboy This is a myth. In fact, it's been debunked over and over. Here's one article from last week of Feb, when the carnage had just started. FreeFincal did another analysis after second week of March. While in theory, you're correct that cash positions would prevent larger drawdowns, but...

P Chidambaram: Franklin Templeton’s decision you wind up 6 mutual funds is a matter of grave concern to investors and the industry

@lukapyon03 NBIM, Norways's pension fund (world's biggest SWF), have recently sold a lot of Indian bonds. Read here. This was big enough to trigger a scare among other foreign investors, that they might have liquidated as well. Also, during times of crisis and uncertainty, people look for...

P Chidambaram: Franklin Templeton’s decision you wind up 6 mutual funds is a matter of grave concern to investors and the industry

@montse811 I feel you're missing the forest for the trees. Mutual funds invest in securities listed in the market. A debt mutual fund is no different. When you're seeing an issue with a mutual fund, it usually signals a larger issue with underlying asset class. It's not about protecting the...

LARGE CAP FUNDS VS NIFTY 50 FUNDS , A PERFORMANCE COMPARISONS SO FAR (DIRECT PLANS)

@resjudicata If it were so easy, why are fund houses hiring fund managers and arming them with equity research teams? What if the ones you leave out suddenly starts zooming up? Also "beating" is not an absolute thing. It depends on time period. You can look at strategy indices, like Nifty...

LARGE CAP FUNDS VS NIFTY 50 FUNDS , A PERFORMANCE COMPARISONS SO FAR (DIRECT PLANS)

@resjudicata It depends on the underlying index, and liquidity of stocks in that index. Nifty stocks, especially the bigger companies in this index, are quite liquid. In this case, having higher AUM, is a good thing. SBI Nifty ETF is the biggest equity mutual fund in country, in terms of AUM...

Query - Mutual fund returns over the years

@uno34 XIRR = rate of return Absolute return = net growth It's like comparing speed with distance covered. If you're going from home to office (part of daily commute), you won't care much for the actual speed. You just want to reach there within a reasonable time, and not get too delayed in...
