How screwed am I with Pension investment to date?

@resjudicata this one isn’t too bad. Be aware that the totals that these things generate are normally quite conservative, and it’s impossible to really know exactly if you’re looking well into the future. For voluntary contributions, as an example of £10 a month. If you’re a lower rate tax...

How screwed am I with Pension investment to date?

@resjudicata Anything extra is a bonus. Just £10 a month extra will make you a couple of grand over 10 years when you consider returns and tax relief.

4.9% vs 0% advice balance transfer card

@sovietchild The 4.9% interest card wins if you pay over 12 months, due to the 5% fee on the 0% card. For a £1000 example, split over 12 months: 0%+5% fee: £1000+£50 fee =£1050 payback 4.9% interest £1000+~£25= £1025 to pay back. As the 4.9% interest will be calculated daily, paying it off...

Just moved into my first flat and feel like my landlords have set the gas rate extremely high

@benthebeliever I know. Frightening isn’t it. Domestic gas now is running at 20-30p, but the price cap is keeping it at around 10p. Business is just free rein and a Wild West when it come to energy nowdays. Theres no government protection, and the prices they’re charging are just monstrous.

Just moved into my first flat and feel like my landlords have set the gas rate extremely high

@faithinmet To be honest, that chippy is barely a business in the usual sense. I doubt it’s even properly registered anywhere. The colleagues wife (who works there) was pregnant and wanted to go on maternity leave, naturally. Turned out she’d never paid a penny in tax or national insurance, or...

Just moved into my first flat and feel like my landlords have set the gas rate extremely high

@maranathasoon Whenever I see “you can break contracts” it’s usually bullshit to be honest. Or the what you have to do to break the contract is the same as closing the business anyway.

How long have they been charging us 6.5% on Student loans? 🫣😂

@cp115 For a lot of people? Jack shit all. I have two degrees. Love them both. Wouldn’t have done anything differently. But I would be earning roughly the same had I stopped in retail and worked plenty of overtime. For some roles, such as nursing, then the degree gets you the job, you can’t...

Just moved into my first flat and feel like my landlords have set the gas rate extremely high

@carrico They arnt allowed to resell for profit, but it is entirely possible this is a 1:1 reflection of what they’re actually paying. The local chippy (a colleagues wife works there) has been whacked with a massive increase in their gas price (their fryers are gas powered so it’s a significant...

Why invest at all when fixed-rate savings account are so high? [6-month "update"]

@julie121 And you’re right. And OP has used a convenient point in time to get their message across. I’m countering it with the opposite likelihood. You’re absolutely right that over longer timescales stocks beat cash. That’s not in debate. What I’m concerned about is someone reads “looks how...

Why invest at all when fixed-rate savings account are so high? [6-month "update"]

@david_thesalmst And I’m saying the opposite. Just because the stock market has had a really good six months doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be using cash savings accounts. Imagine how you’d feel if someone were to pull out their life savings and invest it in stocks off the back of this post, and the...

Why invest at all when fixed-rate savings account are so high? [6-month "update"]

@blesstloms 6 months is pointless. But it’s allowed OP to take a very small snapshot and make a big fat ass statement about how we should all invest our money. To be honest, this sort of post is pretty dangerous for those who may take it out of context.

Do I need to pay tax when I sell PCs on eBay and Facebook market?

@landonnate Not if your income remains below your personal allowance, which is around £12k. Still need to do self assessment if your turnover is above £1k though. Even though there’ll be nothing to pay
