Move now or later in career when JPY is better? Japanese-American considering FAANG opportunity

@manishk012 Renounce= choice in reality. You lose one nationality. There are also penalties. You can also lose your Japan passport in some cases. Lack of current active enforcement does not make it legal.

Is 4-5 million yen a good salary in Tokyo?

@msulli Then the average should not be mentioned. “Average” by definition is not “good.” The take-home salary of 4M in year 2 is not “good” by most any measure.

Is 4-5 million yen a good salary in Tokyo?

@msulli That was not his question: he asked what a good salary is. 4M is not a “good” salary in Tokyo by any standard.

Converting to a non-fixed term contract

@hark Since OP is a 非常勤講師, even if the university renews the contract, OP would remain a 非常勤講師, without any research allowance, benefits, insurance, or pension, etc. If OP were a 常勤講師, then this thread would make sense and be worth the bandwidth, but OP is not in a promotable position. The...

Mortgage declined, can’t get reasoning from bank

@revstockton True. I think the realtor would know as they can get info from the bank and then help find a different financial institution. I defer to you!

Converting to a non-fixed term contract

@phillev Yes, university contracts do not always fall in line with corporate contracts in construction and interpretation.

Mortgage declined, can’t get reasoning from bank

@revstockton Because buildings lose value more and faster than land, they may have written off the building (or a major portion of it) and relied more on the land value and decided against the risk. A real estate agent will be able to tell you and will know which bank can help you.

Converting to a non-fixed term contract

@phillev It depends on the rules for promotion. Starting in the mid 1990s, the contract instructor role emerged as universities aimed to avoid permanent hires due to anticipated declines in student numbers, while MEXT encouraged hiring teachers with Maru-go (first author, second language...

Move now or later in career when JPY is better? Japanese-American considering FAANG opportunity

@nemoigloo U.S. citizens have a tax obligation if they earn money, certainly at that level. 2. Not necessarily. 3. Who knows where the Yen will be next year. 4. A CPA consultation is highly advisable as this is Reddit.

Converting to a non-fixed term contract

@phillev Unless they don’t renew for a reason tied to the contract such as a lack of pubs or research grants, etc. they won’t

Move now or later in career when JPY is better? Japanese-American considering FAANG opportunity

@nemoigloo That’s the exemption for not paying taxes. Even if she is paying more tax in Japan on the excess than in the US, that amount is deductible to bring the tax burden to the same amount.

Converting to a non-fixed term contract

@primarymay If they are not going to switch you at five years, chances are they won’t do so at ten years, either. My guess is they are hoping people will simply leave, and they will hire someone cheaper. Get ready to find a non-contract tenure position.

Move now or later in career when JPY is better? Japanese-American considering FAANG opportunity

@l0v3dr34m There are laws which prevent double taxation. That’s not even an issue.

Converting to a non-fixed term contract

@primarymay Yes, part-time instructors are not considered faculty, so they can teach without an MA in many cases, especially in general English and conversation classes. Good luck with your challenges.

Mortgage declined, can’t get reasoning from bank

@skupi That might be the reason right there. Ask your Realtor especially if it is a 35 year loan, and you or the house will be too old to finish paying for it.

Converting to a non-fixed term contract

@primarymay Yes, it is. I believe your contract likely includes a clause along the lines of: 'This is a one-year contract, renewable up to four times.’ You are not considered faculty, but rather a hired specialist to teach additional classes that tenured teachers cannot accommodate. If you...

Converting to a non-fixed term contract

@primarymay According to the MEXT Guidelines, are you eligible for promotion to a professorship, or are you engaged in only teaching general education classes while seeking legal recourse for your contract renewal? In either scenario, qualifying for Marugo presents the simplest route to not only...

Converting to a non-fixed term contract

@primarymay Are both contracts for 非常勤講師 positions?

Move now or later in career when JPY is better? Japanese-American considering FAANG opportunity

@gingermarie Keep out, and simply ignore the "average salary" as it is completely irrelevant to the argument. 15M for someone in their 20s is an excellent salary. Period. Great opportunity.
