ASHP and Solar PV, are they worth it? - my experience and data

@adotiln I think I've been more conservative with my calculations to be honest. You're right that battery capacity loss is something I haven't factored in but this particular GivEnergy battery has an unlimited cycle warranty for 10 years in which they guarantee at least 80% capacity at the end...

ASHP and Solar PV, are they worth it? - my experience and data

@presh201 Battery won't be installed until May, but I'd say between Sept and April we'd be using 100% of capacity daily (8.2kWh). GivEnergy have a what looks to be a decent API so I'll be doing some data crunching once we're all set up.

ASHP and Solar PV, are they worth it? - my experience and data

@presh201 I needed the data to figure out battery size rather than to calculate ROI. I was pretty confident the savings were there, but didn't want to get a huge capacity battery and only use 50% of the capacity most of the year

ASHP and Solar PV, are they worth it? - my experience and data

@presh201 That's honestly what this is for me rather than a true "investment". The ROI is just to make the financial justification, but my main objective was to minimise our energy costs with the right systems and not have to sacrifice comfort. I'm also really excited about Vehicle2Grid...

Solar PV and Battery ROI - one year of data

@eldalar If it is just the 8.2 kWh battery (no solar) then you'd be looking at around 240kWh of capacity over a 30 day month. The battery doesn't ever drain completely, it stops discharging at 4% to protect it from degrading. You'd also be using the grid whilst you charge overnight but yes the...

Solar PV and Battery ROI - one year of data

@resjudicata Nope. Most of the time I use the grid to charge my battery when my rate is cheaper between 00:30 and 04:30, then it discharges for the rest of the day. If we're lucky have a few days of solid sunny weather I can get away with not charging overnight and just using solar to charge.

Solar PV and Battery ROI - one year of data

@resjudicata This is solar charging the battery instead of the grid so I save money by not needing to use grid power to charge the battery

Solar PV and Battery ROI - one year of data

@therese1234 Octopus Go (and Intelligent) have much lower rates during off peak hours which are fixed for the contract length (1 year) and I prefer having the certainty of cheap rates at specific times. I recall the winter rates for Agile being quite high on average as well. My new Go rate has a...

Is 1200kwH a month abnormaly high electricity usage?

@little_sparrow 1195kWh over 57 days = an average of 21kWh per day. That is high for a home that's gas heated. Did you confirm whether you have an immersion heater? If you do have a hot water tank, this is very likely the culprit. Your 500W pump basically uses 500W per hour of usage so even if...

Is 1200kwH a month abnormaly high electricity usage?

@little_sparrow Your screenshot of usage bar chart is a bit hard to decipher. What time period does each bar represent? Doesn't look like monthly usage? Are you submitting readings every month? 1195kWh is a crazy amount in a month (if that's correct) for a gas heated home. Common root causes...

ASHP and Solar PV, are they worth it? - my experience and data

@cg828 Another user mentioned Home Assistant which is a very open source sort of platform for home automation. There's literally thousands of apps and tools that the community has developed to work with different smart home devices. You could in theory have something set up that triggers your...

Solar PV and Battery ROI - one year of data

@cupofdaisies We were in a house built pre-war before this and I had given serious consideration to having external insulation cladding added (I recall being quoted £10k at the time). Don't know if it would have made enough of a difference, but I'm glad we decided to move instead.

ASHP and Solar PV, are they worth it? - my experience and data

@alpinehi The builder's are neighborhood friends that built their own home to a very similar standard. They bought an old barn conversion in our neighborhood, tore it down and split it into 2 plots. We reserved the first plot and the 2nd one is under construction still. There are definitely new...

Solar PV and Battery ROI - one year of data

@ayopoker House was completed in 2021. Highest bill in the winter was £120, in the summer it's about £25 (standing charge alone accounts for £15 month). If I averaged it out over the year I think we'd be paying about £50 a month.

Is 1200kwH a month abnormaly high electricity usage?

@little_sparrow Our house was a complete rebuild - as in the old building was torn down and built with a new structure and foundation so the builders could dig down into the ground around the basement to do their work.

ASHP and Solar PV, are they worth it? - my experience and data

@nishaphilips85 I definitely started looking at Home Assistant to automate my home and had all sorts of ideas about automated blinds etc but I ended up just setting up Eufy cameras and some Hue lights and motion sensors. All that can be configured in app so I didn't set up a Home Assistant...

Is 1200kwH a month abnormaly high electricity usage?

@rasico2012 Yeah our sump pump is triggered by a float switch so it might trigger a lot after a lot of rainy days, but it shouldn't be constantly on (unless the float switch is broken).

Is 1200kwH a month abnormaly high electricity usage?

@little_sparrow We've got a basement that was made liveable when the property was completely rebuilt. Basically you have to make the basement as water tight as possible and also provide a way to divert and remove the ground water from building up too much and creating the pressure that can force...
